According to a report from Ben Thompson of FightHype.com this past week, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is considering the addition of a new strength and conditioning coach to his team ahead of his September return to the ring.

Alvarez is coming off of his biggest win as a professional on April 20th, as he defeated a very determined Austin Trout over twelve competitive rounds inside of the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Despite the victory, Alvarez seemed to slow down over the second half of the fight, with his work rate noticeably dipping.

One of the men said to be in consideration by Alvarez is the controversial Angel Heredia, who confirmed the reports.

“I’ve been getting a lot of calls from several people in Mexico,” Heredia would tell me recently. “But they didn’t specify exactly what the whole situation was. At this point, yeah, I’m assuming that he’s looking for a conditioning coach. I know that people from Mexico have been calling me and have been leaving a few messages, but nothing concrete.”

According to a BoxingScene.com report from Miguel Rivera over the weekend, there appears to be a weight issue that must be worked out before a super fight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez can come to fruition.

The WBC and WBA champion at the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds, Alvarez is coming off of a hard-fought unanimous decision over Austin Trout on April 20th in San Antonio, Texas.

Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO’s) is also coming off of a decision victory, having outclassed Robert Guerrero on May 4th to defend his WBC welterweight title.

Alvarez’s manager Jose “Chepo” Reynoso claims that Mayweather is insisting that Alvarez come down in weight from 154 pounds if the fight were to happen, this despite Floyd also holding a WBA title of his own in the junior middleweight division.

On Saturday night, former HBO analyst Larry Merchant was again in the thick of the action as WBC junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez added the WBA bauble to his collection with a unanimous decision victory over former champion Austin Trout.

Calling the action from ringside for Golden Boy Promotions’ international broadcast, Merchant seemed to favor Alvarez’s precise punching over Trout’s determined fortitude, with a seventh round knockdown scored by ‘Canelo’ certainly helping his cause.

Three judges would agree, as scores of 118-109, 116-111, and 115-112 all favored the Jalisco, Mexico native.

Shortly after the bout, I touched base with Merchant, who shared with me his thoughts on Alvarez’s rising star status as well as his opinion as to why a fight with pound for pound stalwart Floyd Mayweather isn’t on the near horizon.
