This weekend’s welterweight title match between WBO champion Timothy Bradley and Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez appears to be a fascinating stylistic matchup on paper.

In Bradley, we have a determined and athletic champion who is coming off of harrowing give-and-take battle with Ruslan Provodnikov this past March.

At 40 years old, Marquez is ten years Bradley’s senior but he is still enjoying the twilight of his career while coming off of the biggest win of his professional run with a chilling 6th round knockout over Manny Pacquiao last December.

There are several different ways to look at this matchup, whether one would lean towards Bradley’s work rate and persistence or Marquez’s accuracy and superb technique.

Larry Merchant is surprised that Adrien Broner wasn’t ‘more explosive’ against Paulie Malignaggi

06BRONER edges MALIGNAGGI

By Chris Robinson

In a fight that was a little tougher than most expected, Adrien Broner won a split-decision over Paulie Malignaggi inside of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday night, becoming successful in his bid to become a three-division world champion at the age of 23.

Due to a spirited effort from Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s), who never seemed to stop moving and punching in bunches despite his lack of pop, Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) appeared to be deadlocked with the Brooklyn native over the first half of the fight. As the action wore on, Broner’s precise and more powerful punches began to find their mark as he marched towards victory.

Shortly after the dust had settled from Broner’s latest triumph, longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant, never one to hold back his thoughts, weighed in and admitted he was a bit taken aback by how the clash played out.

On Saturday night, former HBO analyst Larry Merchant was again in the thick of the action as WBC junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez added the WBA bauble to his collection with a unanimous decision victory over former champion Austin Trout.

Calling the action from ringside for Golden Boy Promotions’ international broadcast, Merchant seemed to favor Alvarez’s precise punching over Trout’s determined fortitude, with a seventh round knockdown scored by ‘Canelo’ certainly helping his cause.

Three judges would agree, as scores of 118-109, 116-111, and 115-112 all favored the Jalisco, Mexico native.

Shortly after the bout, I touched base with Merchant, who shared with me his thoughts on Alvarez’s rising star status as well as his opinion as to why a fight with pound for pound stalwart Floyd Mayweather isn’t on the near horizon.

It had been a little while since I had touched base with longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant to discuss the sweet science in depth.

No longer announcing fights for HBO and having recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, Merchant has been enjoying his newfound free time very well it seems. As one would guess, Merchant still has great enthusiasm for the boxing game and is always open to discussing anything related to the sport.

Calling up Merchant recently, we discussed some recent storylines, including WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s bout with Gavin Rees tonight in Atlantic City, his thoughts on junior welterweight brute Lucas Matthysse, the issues with performance-enhancing drugs in the sport of boxing, and why he would have preferred to see junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire face Abner Mares instead of Guillermo Rigondeaux.
