Now 34-0 with 28 knockouts, Garcia may be heading into a big showdown against Yuriorkis Gamboa later this year.

Former HBO analyst Larry Merchant, who was at the fights in New York calling the action for Top Rank’s international feed, sees Gamboa as the ideal move for Garcia.

Pac vs. Bradley 2

At the moment, the next opponent for Manny Pacquiao is still undecided, with Ruslan Provodnikov and Tim Bradley in the running for the shot.

During a recent conversation with veteran color analyst Larry Merchant, he reflected back on Bradley’s memorable 2013 campaign and the topic of a second encounter with Pacquiao.

“He’s making some serious money these days,” Merchant said of Bradley. “And to get that fight he might have to extend his contract with Top Rank. Then you see what happens. Maybe he wins legitimately or decisively the next time out. How does that change the landscape?”

Merchant then expressed some interest in Bradley one day challenging Floyd Mayweather in a high-stakes showdown that would undoubtedly need to see either Golden Boy Promotions, who assist staging Floyd’s fights, or Top Rank, who handle Pacquiao, bend in their ongoing cold war.

“How big would that possibly make a fight with Mayweather and would that put pressure on both promoters to make an agreement for that fight?” Merchant asked. “I don’t think any of us really know at this point because it’s going to depend on whether the fight with Pacquiao gets made and how he does in that fight.”

On Saturday night, Dec. 7, Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux again put on another clinic in outclassing former bantamweight titlist Joseph Agbeko inside of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Rigondeaux, the sport’s reigning WBA and WBO junior featherweight champion, had his Ghanaian foe completely befuddled on his way to the shutout victory.

And while pure boxing enthusiasts will always be able to appreciate the kind of displays that Rigondeaux is able to produce, former HBO analyst Larry Merchant, who was ringside calling the bout for Top Rank’s international feed, seemed less then enthused.

The spotlight shined bright upon Manny Pacquiao this past weekend, as he returned to the ring against Brandon Rios in an effort to find out if he still has some of the same magic in him that saw him stamp himself as one of this generation’s elite prizefighters.

Inside of the Venetian Resort’s Coati Arena in Macau, China, Pacquiao offered up an impressive display by hammering Rios with a bevy of punches from various angles as he carved out a wide unanimous decision victory.

Watching the action unfold from ringside, longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant had a strong curiosity as to how Pacquiao would show himself following his knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez this past December.

On Saturday night, in Corpus Christi, Tex., Nonito Donaire stepped back into the ring for the first time following his upset loss to Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux earlier this year.

In front of Donaire was a familiar foe in Vic Darchinyan, the same man he blitzed out in five rounds over six years ago in one of his most resounding performances to date.

On this night their HBO rematch was far more competitive, however, as Donaire and his awkward Armenian foe appeared to be fighting on even terms through the first eight rounds of their bout.

Some observers even had Darchinyan ahead in the match as the ninth round started, but that is where Donaire took over.

Midway through the frame, Donaire clipped Darchinyan and dropped him with a sweeping left hook.

By Chris Robinson

On Saturday night, Oct. 19, inside of the 1STBANK Center in Denver, Colo., Russian brute Ruslan Provodnikov scored the biggest victory of his career in outlasting hometown favorite and former WBO junior welterweight titlist Mike Alvarado.

The action was nip and tuck early on, but Provodnikov weathered Alvarado’s thunder and came on in the second half of the fight before scoring two knockdowns in the eighth round.

Provodnikov dished out some more heavy leather in the 10th, as Alvarado elected to stay on his stool in between rounds rather than answer the bell for more punishment.

Calling the fight from ringside for the international feed, longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant gave great praise to new champion.
