Floyd Mayweather very well may be coming off of a virtuoso performance on Sept. 14 in Las Vegas, where he dominated a very dangerous Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez over twelve rounds, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a few struggles for the sport’s pound for pound king as he moves forward in his career.

Simply put, Mayweather was so sharp against Alvarez that his performance not only beguiled his 36 years of age, it also left the boxing public wondering who exactly is left on the horizon that can actually challenge him.

Sharing his thoughts on Mayweather’s latest outing, former multi-division titlist Nonito Donaire was quick to give praise.

“He’s an amazing fighter,” Donaire stated. “As much as you may not like Floyd or anything like that, Floyd has the right to brag. He has the right to say whatever he wants. Because he’s on top.”

If you walk into trainer Robert Garcia’s personal gym in Oxnard, Calif. late in the afternoon these days you will be able to spot a new face in the facility, as former multi-division world champion Nonito Donaire has dived back into training.

Donaire is coming off of a unanimous decision loss to Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux this past April and will be looking to get back on track come Nov. 9 with his rematch against Armenia’s Vic Darchinyan.

And while Garcia has been in the corner of Donaire for nearly four years, this marks the first time that the Fil-Am star has left the comforts of his training bases in Northern California to embark on a full-fledged regimen in Oxnard.

Following an intense sparring session with upcoming prospect Rudy Ochoa, I was able to sit down with Donaire and pick his brain on a variety of subjects.

Not much has been heard from former multi-division champion Nonito Donaire following his unanimous decision loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux in April.

Facing off with the slick Cuban inside of the Radio City Music Hall in New York, Donaire had trouble figuring out Rigondeaux’s southpaw style and was a dealt his first defeat in over 12 years.

Having had a successful shoulder surgery weeks later and with his wife Rachel expected to give birth to the couple’s first child any day now, Donaire’s spirits are again upbeat as he eyes a rematch later this year with Armenia’s Vic Darchinyan in an effort to get his career back on track.

“I feel good man,” Donaire told me as we spoke inside of the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas on Friday night during ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” telecast.

Diego Magdaleno and Nonito Donaire resurface at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas

By Chris Robinson

There has been a lot going on in the lives of former world title challenger Diego Magdaleno and former titlist Nonito Donaire.

On April 13th, Donaire would drop a unanimous decision to Cuban stylist Guillermo Rigondeaux inside of the Radio City Music Hall in New York. Despite a 10th round knockdown, Donaire had tremendous difficulty with Rigondeaux’s excellent defense and sharp counter-punching from his southpaw stance as he failed to get into an offensive rhythm.

Following his defeat, Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s), would undergo surgery on his right shoulder and is focusing much of his attention on the upcoming birth of his first child with his wife Rachel.

Magdaleno (23-1, 9 KO’s) was last seen inside of the ropes on April 6th in Macau, China, as he dropped a hotly-contested 12-round split-decision loss to Puerto Rico’s Ramon ‘Rocky’ Martinez in his bid for the WBO junior lightweight championship. Magdaleno was dropped in the fourth round yet gave a solid account of himself.

On Saturday night, from Radio City Music Hall in New York, two-time Cuban gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux captured his biggest victory as a professional with a commanding unanimous decision victory over Nonito Donaire in a junior featherweight unification bout.

Showing deft movement, superior angles, and sharp punching throughout the contest, Rigondeaux proved himself to be the superior fighter as he added the WBO bauble alongside his WBA belt following the announcement of scorecards in his favor reading 116-111, 115-112, and 114-113.

One curious spectator taking in the action was reigning WBO featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia, whose older brother Robert assists Donaire in training.

It had been a little while since I had touched base with longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant to discuss the sweet science in depth.

No longer announcing fights for HBO and having recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, Merchant has been enjoying his newfound free time very well it seems. As one would guess, Merchant still has great enthusiasm for the boxing game and is always open to discussing anything related to the sport.

Calling up Merchant recently, we discussed some recent storylines, including WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s bout with Gavin Rees tonight in Atlantic City, his thoughts on junior welterweight brute Lucas Matthysse, the issues with performance-enhancing drugs in the sport of boxing, and why he would have preferred to see junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire face Abner Mares instead of Guillermo Rigondeaux.

On Tuesday afternoon, I caught up with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum inside of the main lobby of the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While Arum was anticipating the grand arrival of his latest signee, former two-time gold medalist Zou Shiming from China, he took a few moments to address the latest developments with another one of his star fighters, Nonito Donaire.

Donaire is presently eyeing an April return to the ring, with reports having either a clash with WBA junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux or a rematch with former titlist Vic Darchinyan on tap.

There has been plenty of confusion taking place in the camp of Rigondeaux, from his issues with Miami-based Caribe Promotions to the Cuban bringing in the services of trainer Pedro Diaz at the expense of his former coach Jorge Rubio.

“That will be decided by the end of the week,” Arum said when discussing the situation. “We have made an offer to Rigondeaux and we’re waiting to see if he accepts.”

Ismael Salas on training Jorge Linares, Donaire vs. Rigondeaux, and why he feels Yuriorkis Gamboa is a clean fighter

IMG_2221

By Chris Robinson

After catching up with Ismael Salas this past weekend in Las Vegas during Lucas Matthysse’s knockout victory over Mike Dallas Jr. inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, I made a point to swing through and check out the Cuban trainer in camp with his latest pupil, Jorge Linares.

Overseeing the two-division world champion inside of the Long Life Fit Gym on Wednesday afternoon, Salas seems enthused by the prospect of trying to resurrect Linares’ career.

Undoubtedly one of the game’s finer talents, Linares suffered a pair of bloody and debilitating TKO defeats to Antonio DeMarco and Sergio Thompson in October of 2011 and March of 2012 that left his career hanging with serious questions.

During our conversation after their training, Salas spoke on his first ten days working with Linares while also taking time to speak on two of his former charges, WBA junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and former featherweight titlist Yuriorkis Gamboa.
