On Saturday night, inside of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, I spent some time backstage with Five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach prior to his fighter Frankie Gomez’s bout with Lanard Lane.

Still a few hours away from Gomez’s match, Roach and I briefly discussed another pugilist he was recently seen working with in former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz.

Having suffered an upset loss to Josesito Lopez in June, Ortiz would part ways with his then-trainer Danny Garcia shortly after the setback. Temporarily sidelined because of a second surgery for a broken jaw he suffered in his bout with Lopez, Ortiz is still finding time to stay in shape and was spotted working with Roach inside of his Wild Card Boxing Club in Los Angeles late last month.

On Sunday night, Feb. 3, the Baltimore Ravens pulled off a tremendous upset in outlasting the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII become league champions.

Throughout the Super Bowl, as is always the case, the game was littered with several high-priced commercials.

One ad that seems to be generating serious buzz, both positive and negative, is Go Daddy’s clip featuring model Bar Refaeli making out with an awkward looking geek, played by Jesse Heiman, in a feature that is meant to show what happens when “smart” meets “sexy”.

Frank Ocean backs off on the feud with Chris Brown

OCEAN...

According to a report from the LATimes.com on Saturday, Feb. 2, music star Frank Ocean has seemed to gain a sense of forgiveness towards Chris Brown following their wild scuffle.

On Sunday evening, the two men came to blows after a huge disagreement at a recording studio in the Los Angeles area. While there was confusion as to exactly what went down that led to the brawl, one thing that became apparent was that both didn’t come away from the melee unscathed.

Brown was seen a few days later wearing a cast on his right hand while Ocean insisted his hand was injured and that it would affect his upcoming performance at the Grammy Awards.

And while the bad blood seemed to be evident, Ocean has since backed away from the thought of filing charges against Brown over the incident.

According to a report by The Mirror on Saturday, Feb. 2, the UK-based publication claims that One Direction band member Harry Styles had quite the celebration for his 19th birthday party.

Celebrating a party thrown by his friend, Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw, Styles was caught off guard when a fake policewoman turned up at his party for an intimate striptease.

With over 70 people said to be in the east London pub where the bash was held, Styles had to cover his face in embarrassment as the brunette danced personally for him. Key reasons why Floyd Mayweather Sr. is no longer training Andre Dirrell

IMG_0845

In a fight that has flown under the radar, super middleweight contender Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s) will put a 13-month streak of inactivity to rest when he faces off with Ghana’s Michael Gbenga (14-6, 14 KO’s) inside of the Convention Center in McAllen, Texas later this evening.

And while it’s a positive sign to see such a fine talent as Dirrell getting busy again, there were some developments within his recent training camp in Las Vegas that are worth noting.

Outspoken trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. is no longer training Dirrell, as he will instead stay put in Vegas as his charge, undefeated lightweight hopeful Mickey Bey Jr., faces off with Robert Rodriguez inside of the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino tonight.

UFC 156: Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva Official Weigh In [Mandalay Bay – Las Vegas, Nevada]

Earlier today on Friday, Feb. 1, former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem weighed in ahead of his clash with Antonio Silva.

The two men meet tomorrow night in a highly-anticipated duel on UFC 156.

It was December of 2011, at UFC 141, when Overeem made his UFC debut by defeating former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar by TKO at 2:26 of the first round.

And while Overeem appeared to be in line for a title shot against Junior Dos Santos for UFC 146 the following May, some bad news was just around the corner.

Overeem ended up failing his pre-fight drug test from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, as he was caught with a 14-1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio. The allowed ratio was 6-1.

Over a year later and redemption is on the line for Overeem, as he faces no easy task as he will be meeting Silva, the Brazilian brute.

At today’s weigh-in, both fighters appeared to be in tremendous shape, with Overeem coming in at 264 pounds while Silva hit 262 pounds.

The two men had some friendly trash talk towards the end of their match and tensions will be high on Saturday.

When it was reported a few weeks ago by US Magazine that “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss had become engaged to Todd Tucker, fans of the show seemed to be genuinely happy for the reality star.

The initial report of the engagement claims that Tucker proposed to Burruss with a “gorgeous two-carat white diamond sparkler” ring that was customized by Gregg Ruth in Las Vegas. Reports claim that the ring could be anywhere from $40,000 in total.

However, according to a report from Sister2SisterMagazine.com on Thursday, Jan. 31, it looks like the ring might not be worth nearly as much.

Roger Mayweather still wants Manny Pacquiao, a Juan Manuel Marquez rematch, and Tim Bradley for Floyd

By Chris Robinson

During a recent swing through the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, I again caught up with outspoken trainer and former two-division world champion Roger Mayweather.

And while the boxing world continues to wait for an official word on who Roger’s nephew and undefeated pound for pound star Floyd Mayweather will face next, the elder Mayweather seems to be taking the process in with a nonchalant attitude.

“There’s still fights out there for Floyd,” Roger would explain when asked of Floyd’s May 4th return to the MGM Grand.

“There’s still a lot of money to be made,” Roger added. “Hopefully the fights he’s going to have is going to be big, big fights. The next three fights should be big.”
