On Saturday night, February 22, Tyson Fury came through with perhaps his most brilliant performance to date in halting former champion Deontay Wilder in seven rounds.

The fight took place on a joint FOX/ESPN pay per view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, and was a rematch of Fury and Wilder’s first fight from December of 2918. In that contest, Wilder dropped Fury twice, as the two men fought to a split-draw.

Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury defeated Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder by seventh-round stoppage on Saturday night in Las Vegas in a big shocker. Fury (30-0-1, 21 KO’s) handled Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KO’s) very convincingly over seven one-sided rounds in a historic FOX/ESPN joint pay per view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Fury and Wilder had fought to a draw in December of 2018, with Wilder registering two knockdowns, but the rematch was completely different. Fury set the tone of the fight early, took the fight to Wilder, and scored two knockdowns of his own before Wilder’s corner threw in the towel in the seventh.

On Saturday night, Feb. 8, WBC Featherweight World Champion Gary Russell Jr. successfully defended his title by winning a unanimous decision over mandatory challenger Tugstsogt Nyambayar. The fight aired on SHOWTIME in a Premier Boxing Champions event from PPL Center in Allentown, PA.

Scores reading 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112 went in Russell’s favor, but the contest was far from a walkover. It was the fifth title defense for Russell (31-1, 18 KO’s) and the first loss for the 26-year old Nyambayar (11-1, 9 KO’s).

FLORES

By Chris Robinson

Former interim title challenger BJ Flores is in Miami this week, as he will be in the corner of popular YouTube star-turned debuting boxer Jake Paul ahead of his grudge match vs. Ali Eson Gib. Paul vs. Gib will take place on DAZN later tonight, as a chief undercard attraction to WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade’s title defense vs. Irishman Luke Keeler.

But I was actually more interested in Flores’ take on the looming rematch between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and former lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. The two giants face off for a second time on February 22 in Las Vegas, with everyone’s memory of their split-draw verdict from December 2018 still lingering.

This weekend, one of boxing’s top fighters, WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford, returns to the ring, where he will defend his title vs. unbeaten #1 contender Egis “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas. The fight will take place from Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening and air on ESPN at 9 p.m. ET.

Crawford (35-0, 26 KOs) is looking for a third defense of his welterweight crown against Kavaliauskas (21-0-1, 17 KOs), but it’s admittedly not the fight that he prefers at the moment. Crawford is looking for unification matches, and the biggest names possible at this point.
