On Saturday night, Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse once again impressed, blitzing out a very formidable Lamont Peterson in under three rounds.

Tangling with the IBF junior welterweight titlist inside of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Matthysse would score a knockdown in the second round and two more in the third, the first coming from a wicked left hook, before referee Steve Smoger waived the contest off.

Matthysse sees his record improve to 34-2 with 32 knockouts as fans and insiders cross their fingers in hopes that a rumored September collision with WBA/WBC champion Danny Garcia will come to fruition.

There were several boxing luminaries in the building for Matthysse’s virtuoso display, including former junior welterweight champion Amir Khan.

Having come across as gentleman of the sport over the years, it’s not surprising to expect a lack of pre-fight drama or theatrics to be coming from IBF junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse, the division’s WBC interim champion, ahead of their pivotal match later tonight.

Peterson faces Matthysse inside of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in a Showtime-televised attraction that will change the landscape of the junior welterweight class, this despite the fight taking place at a catch weight of 141 pounds.

While speaking to various members of the media ahead of his 34th professional bout, Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) seemed to dismiss the notion that he had to be weary of Matthysse’s brute punching power.

After a tumultuous 2012 that saw him sitting on the sidelines, IBF junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson returned with an emphatic victory this past February, battering former titlist Kendall Holt over the course of eight rounds before seeing the fight waived off.

With momentum again on his side, Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) finds himself in a crucial match later tonight, as he will be locking horns with Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) inside of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Regarded by many as the best fighter at 140 pounds, Matthysse is an iron-willed, heavy-handed puncher who has boxing skills and abilities that are often overlooked.

And while Matthysse last impression left for boxing fans was a chilling one, as he iced Mike Dallas Jr. in under one round, Peterson feels that all the hoopla surrounding his vaunted power has been overplayed.

On Friday night, inside of the DC Armory in Washington, DC, IBF junior welterweight titlist Lamont Peterson made a stirring return to the ring in halting a game but outgunned Kendall Holt inside of eight rounds.

Peterson was sidelined all of last year due to failing a pre-fight drug test ahead of his scheduled rematch this past May with Amir Khan, who he had upset in December of 2011.

After Khan saw his opportunity for revenge against Peterson go up in flames, he then turned his attention to a July encounter with Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia. In a shocker, Garcia would drop Khan three times on his way towards a 4th round TKO.

Earlier tonight, inside of the DC Armory in Washington, DC, IBF junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson ended a year-plus layoff by emphatically halting former titlist Kendall Holt.

Peterson hadn’t fought since his upset victory over Amir Khan in December of 2011 and it was easy to spot his rust early as Holt got off to a comfortable start while also digging in some nice lefts to the body.

Peterson would erupt in the fourth round, however, as he turned up the pressure and dropped Holt with a crushing right hand. Peterson would score another knockdown in the sixth round, as it was obvious that the end was near.

Referee Tony Weeks would wisely stop the action 1 minute and 42 seconds into the eighth round as Holt was taking punishment along the ropes.

Watching the action from his home base in Indio, California, trainer Joel Diaz seemed impressed with Peterson.

It had been a little while since I had touched base with longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant to discuss the sweet science in depth.

No longer announcing fights for HBO and having recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, Merchant has been enjoying his newfound free time very well it seems. As one would guess, Merchant still has great enthusiasm for the boxing game and is always open to discussing anything related to the sport.

Calling up Merchant recently, we discussed some recent storylines, including WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s bout with Gavin Rees tonight in Atlantic City, his thoughts on junior welterweight brute Lucas Matthysse, the issues with performance-enhancing drugs in the sport of boxing, and why he would have preferred to see junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire face Abner Mares instead of Guillermo Rigondeaux.

In the 140-pound division, there is no fighter with as much momentum at the moment as interim WBC champion Lucas Matthysse.

Facing off with Mike Dallas Jr. inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night, Matthysse came through with a crushing first round knockout that seemed to send shockwaves throughout the boxing community.

Catching up the Argentinean’s countryman and fellow prizefighter Marcos Maidana recently, I asked for his feelings on Matthysse’s destructive performance.

Showtime’s Steve Farhood claims that Lucas Matthysse vs. Marcos Maidana would be the biggest fight in Argentina’s history

By Chris Robinson

With WBA/WBC junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia pulling out of his Feb. 9 date with Zab Judah at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the entire junior welterweight division is feeling the effect of the fight being rescheduled.

And while Garcia now sets his sights towards an April 27th clash with Judah, one man who had been eyeing the Philadelphia native, interim WBC champion Lucas Matthysse, now seems to be without an even more unclear forecast of what his 2013 calendar year will encompass.

Matthysse impressed this past weekend with a chilling fist round knockout over Mike Dallas Jr. inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After cutting ties with Freddie Roach, Jorge Linares now training in Las Vegas with Yuriorkis Gamboa’s former trainer

By Chris Robinson

On Saturday night, there was no shortage of boxing luminaries inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada for Lucas Matthysse’s crushing first-round knockout over Mike Dallas Jr.

Such notables in the building included former champions Zab Judah and Shane Mosley, junior welterweight contender Karim Mayfield, former WBO female super bantamweight champion Ana Julaton, junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo, rising lightweight Sharif Bogere, and former two-division titlist Jorge Linares.

Striking a conversation with Linares, I quickly discovered that much has changed for the Venezuelan-born prizefighter.

Paulie Malignaggi claims that ‘everybody’ wants to see Lucas Matthysse vs. Danny Garcia

On Saturday, Jan. 26, inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, interim WBC junior welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) made short work of Mike Dallas Jr., (19-3-1, 8 KO’s), chopping him down in under one round.

After taking his time to study his opponent, Matthysse connected on Dallas with a thudding right hand and a follow-up left that had his 26-year old foe out  on his face and unable to continue.

Matthysse now looks towards bigger bounty, but it remains to be seen if the 30-year old Agentinean will get the bouts he desires most. For several months, Matthysse has called for a match with WBA/WBC champion Danny Garcia, who is presently scheduled for a Feb. 9 date against former champion Zab Judah.
