Very few prizefighters in boxing have come along and taken the sport by storm in the way that three-division world champion Adrien Broner has over the past few years.
Possessing qualities that are both charismatic and outlandish, Broner is the type of guy you seem to either love or hate. But at the end of the day, the 23-year old Cincinnati native seems to find a way to keep spotlight shining upon him.
The latest news surrounding Broner is that of a possible clash with Argentina’s Marcos Maidana, who he likely will meet this November in Las Vegas in his first pay per view showcase. It’s a risky matchup for the ultra-confident Broner, but the type of fight that will continue his climb up boxing’s ladder if successful.
Wanting a better sense of Broner as a fighter and person, I reached out to his longtime trainer Mike Stafford to discuss a few topics related to his charge.
In this one on one, Stafford discusses Broner’s recent razor-thin victory over Paulie Malignaggi in Brooklyn, gives his thoughts on the feedback from critics, reveals whether they might train in Las Vegas this coming camp, and shares his outlook on a possible meeting between his fighter and pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather in the future.

As the Sep. 14 Floyd Mayweather-Saul Alvarez super fight inches closer to reality, there is no shortage of buzz or exposure for this year’s biggest event.
The latest rumor that caught the sport like wildfire was of the reports of ‘Canelo’ destroying his sparring partners in his Big Bear training camp in California ahead of his challenge of Mayweather.
Stories of guys being knocked out, broken ribs, and injured shoulders were coming from Canelo’s training bases, but people, especially those close to Mayweather, seemed skeptical.
Add Mayweather’s father and head trainer Floyd Sr. to the list of those unconvinced.
“It’s a bunch of BS,” Floyd Sr. stated recently. “That’s all it is, a bunch of BS.”

Media Day for Ishe Smith, the first Vegas Born Boxing Champion making his first defense in the undercard of “The One: Mayweather vs. Canelo”

The alarm went off at 5:30 AM in the house of the IBF Light Middleweight Champion Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith (25-5, 11 KO). It was time to get up and get ready for a segment at Channel 5 Fox News in Las Vegas, followed by a quick breakfast and then a stop at Channel 13 ABC News at 11 AM. It turned out to be a busy day for the first ever Vegas Born World Boxing Champion.
You could say that being crowned a champion is by far the best thing that could have happened to Smith at this stage of his career. After all the ups and downs that life had thrown at him, you know he cherishes every media commitment he is presented with.
With his first title defense scheduled to take place on the undercard of “THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo” a four-fight SHOWTIME PPV event that will take place Saturday, Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and because the fight will take place in Smith’s backyard, he needs to do promotional segments. Not only to promote the fight but also to promote the community events in the area happening because of the generosity of The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation.
Smith is no stranger to the media though; he was after all a contestant in the popular reality show “The Contender.” So he welcomes every opportunity to showcase his city and as a true lover of the sport of boxing he is excited to talk about his passion and share his story with as many people as are willing to listen.
To end the day and after a very intense workout in preparation for his fight, Smith paid a visit to Cantina Deportiva ESPN 1460 in Las Vegas. Jesus Lopez, the host of the show, has always been a strong supporter of Smith. Smith spent an hour at the station and talked about everything from camp to the back to school drive put together at the Mayweather Boxing Club over the weekend.
The day was long and full of media appearances. But don’t ask Smith to take a break just yet, this is what the champion had dreamed his life would be like after “The Contender.”
His break just happened to come a few years later than expected.

Trainer Joel Diaz says he knows ‘for a fact’ that Bob Arum wants Juan Manuel Marquez to beat Tim Bradley

As the Oct. 12 Tim Bradley-Juan Manuel Marquez pay per view showdown approaches us, there is some noticeable tension in the air.
A visibly discouraged Bradley spoke on his concerns with me earlier this month pertaining to the drug testing protocols that are being used in advance of the bout.
While initially seeking to have either VADA or USADA drug testing enforced, Bradley was thrown for a loop when he discovered that his promoter and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum instead had plans of using a third party agency in cooperation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission to oversee the testing.
Bradley initially mentioned that he would consider walking away from the fight if VADA or USADA weren’t involved, citing his contract that stated either party needed to be used in conjunction with the fight.
Finally, Bradley would put the issue aside, as he instead turned his focus solely towards his preparation for Marquez.
Despite being more than ready to dive into a full-fledged training camp in order to prepare himself for battle against one of Mexico’s finest prizefighters, you can sense that Bradley isn’t completely confident in how the situation is being handled.
