Tim Bradley speaks on why he chose to sign an extension with Top Rank ahead of the Pacquiao rematch

As reported by various sources, WBO welterwe ight champion Tim Bradley will be facing off with Manny Pacquiao on April 12 in Las Vegas in a big rematch on HBO pay per view.

Having defeated Pacquiao via split-decision in June of 2012, Bradley signed an extension with Top Rank ahead of the Pacquiao rematch and recently told BoxingScene.com’s Ryan Burton why it was such a logical choice.

“I am very happy with the deal,” said Bradley. “I am making six million dollars for this fight. I am very familiar with them. I don’t know anyone over there at Golden Boy. I like the familiarity and I have made a lot of money with Top Rank so I didn’t feel any reason to go anywhere else.”

Larry Merchant says Manny Pacquiao will have to outfight Tim Bradley in their rematch

Boxing’s next big rematch is on its way, as it was officially announced that Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley will lock horns yet again inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 12.

Bradley won a highly-unpopular split-decision over Pacquiao in June of 2012 and there is definitely some unfinished business on the table.

Catching up with former HBO analyst Larry Merchant over the weekend, he insists the matchup is even on paper.

“I think it’s the fight that had to be made and I think don’t think Pacquiao needs to outbox Bradley,” Merchant revealed. “For me it’s a pick em’ fight.”

Asked what it is about Bradley that resonates, Merchant pointed towards his successful 2013 campaign that saw him win a hellacious firefight against Ruslan Provodnikov before returning to edge Juan Manuel Marquez in competitive chess match.

“His resilience,” said Merchant. “He came back and fought the kind of fight we didn’t know he had in him against Provodnikov. And then he comes back and he beats Marquez. Those are important statements.”

Many saw Pacquiao out boxing Bradley in their first match but Merchant feels that the Filipino star will have to take things even further in the second encounter.

“I question whether Pacquiao can just outbox Bradley,” Merchant said. “I think he’s going to have to outfight him. And we don’t know if that’s where Pacquiao wants to go.”

As the weeks pass by, the boxing world continues to wait for the official confirmation of Manny Pacquiao’s next ring foe.

Coming off of a solid performance this past November that saw him win convincingly against Brandon Rios over 12 rounds, Pacquiao is slated for an April return to the ring in Las Vegas.

Despite some confusion regarding a potential rematch with Tim Bradley, there still is a realistic chance that Pacquiao could end up facing the Palm Springs star again in an effort to erase the controversial split-decision loss he suffered against him in June of 2012.

For the past weeks I’ve gathered some thoughts from various boxing minds on the prospect of Pacquiao vs. Bradley II. Read below to see what everyone is saying.

“That’s a tough fight and that’s the fight I’d like to see. Pacquiao would have to do the same thing he did in the first fight. Bradley would have to make some adjustments because he never really got to Pacquiao in the first fight like he wanted to.” – Four division world champion Roy Jones Jr.

“I would stick with Pacquiao. He’s just stronger, faster, and the first fight wasn’t too convincing for the fight to go on Bradley’s side. I think that will play a role for Pacquiao and make him come in more aggressive where he wants to make a statement and knock him out.” – Undefeated welterweight contender Jessie Vargas

“Pacquiao might pull that off. I’m just saying myself from the first fight, it depends on what you thought about it. I just see a different fight.” – Outspoken trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.

“I think it would a good fight for all the fans. Boxing always needs another warrior in there and Tim Bradley, no matter what he says, he goes in and he fights his ass off. I think the second time around it will be a bigger, wider margin [for Bradley].” – Junior lightweight contender Diego Magdaleno

“To get that fight [Bradley] might have to extend his contract with Top Rank. Then you see what happens. Maybe he wins legitimately or decisively the next time out. How does that change the landscape? How big would that possibly make a fight with Mayweather and would that put pressure on both promoters to make an agreement for that fight?” – Former HBO analyst Larry Merchant

“You know what? I don’t think much of Bradley as a puncher, but Bradley’s going to do everything he can to win. But Bradley knows he can’t keep Pacquiao off of him. This time around, Pacquiao might hurt Bradley. If Pacquiao gets in shape like Pacquiao can get in, not only will he walk right through Bradley, he’s liable to ruin Bradley.” – Former lightweight champion Nate Campbell

“That’s a very interesting fight. Like I tell people, Bradley is one of the hardest-fighting people in boxing. He throws 90-million punches; he’s going to be on you for three minutes and 12 rounds. If you fight Tim, you’re going to come to fight. He’s a tough dude; he can box. Listen, I like the guy.” – Former two-division champion Zab Judah

“He can fight Bradley; that’s a good fight for him. Timothy Bradley is a good fight for him. I think he’s going to give Pacquiao problems anyways. The thing of it is, hey, it’s going to be a good fight. One way or the other it’s still a good fight.” – The always unabashed Roger Mayweather, former two-division world champion and current day trainer

Naazim Richardson feels that Danny Garcia and Tim Bradley are two fighters who have the tools to possibly upset Mayweather

As the days go by, we continue to wait for word on Floyd Mayweather’s next ring opponent.

At the moment there seems to be a very strong chance that Mayweather will end up facing off with British star Amir Khan on May 3 from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

And while Khan surely serves as one of the biggest names for Mayweather at the moment, North Philadelphia’s Naazim Richardson has two other prizefighters in mind who could possibly trouble, and maybe even defeat Mayweather.

“Tim [Bradley] and Danny Garcia are capable of beating anybody in boxing,” The Zen-like trainer told me recently when discussing the WBO welterweight titlist and the WBA/WBC junior welterweight champion.

“Tim and Danny Garcia are young versions of a Bernard Hopkins,” Richardson added. “You can never gauge them. You can’t watch film on them. You can’t anticipate with them. Because they are super over-achievers. What Bernard Hopkins was. What Joe Frazier was.”

And while Richardson isn’t bold enough to side with either man against Mayweather, he wouldn’t be stunned if either pulled an upset.

“If Tim Bradley or Danny Garcia were to beat Floyd Mayweather I would not be shocked,” Richardson stated. “Would you bet against Floyd? F*ck no. The only person you’re supposed to bet against Floyd with is Wladimir Klitschko on a good day.”

It’s obvious in speaking with Richardson just how much respect he has towards the Grand Rapids native, however.

“Floyd is one of them fighters now who you aren’t supposed to bet against until you see him lose,” Richardson explained. “He’s that special of a kid. But Tim or Danny getting past him would not shock me at all.”

Coming off of a successful outing against Brandon Rios on Nov. 23, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao is slated for an April return to the ring in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao’s unanimous decision victory over Rios last month in Macau, China proved that his heart is still very much in the game following his horrific knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez a year ago.

A recent conversation with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum revealed that there are three names in the mix for Pacquiao’s April return; Marquez, Tim Bradley, and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Bradley won a controversial split-decision over Pacquiao in June of last year. Given the backlash that followed his victory, Richardson feels another close fight could spell bad news for the Palm Springs fighter.

Following a successful comeback performance against Brandon Rios on Nov. 23, Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao is slated for a ring return this April in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There were several question marks surrounding Pacquiao heading into the Rios clash, as his previous fight saw him stopped in horrific fashion by Juan Manuel Marquez, but he showed himself to be more than up to the task in winning a lopsided unanimous decision.

Speaking with Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum on Tuesday evening, he is certain the next opponent for the eight-division champion will be decided in the coming days.

“We’re going to decide before Christmas,” Arum explained. “We’ll [know] who he’s going to fight.”

Arum mentioned that the three names being tossed around are Marquez, Tim Bradley, and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Pacquiao has been in the ring with all three men, facing Marquez in four memorable encounters while dropping a split-decision to Bradley in June of last year. Pacquiao also has sparred several rounds with Provodnikov in recent years.

Asked what the appeal is of each fighter, Arum spoke logically.

“We’re talking to the pay per view people,” he stated. “Whatever makes the most sense.

“I don’t make appeals,” Arum added. “Whatever we decide, we’ll make an intelligent decision. And that’s who we’ll fight.”

Tim Bradley reveals what Brandon Rios must do to have success against Manny Pacquiao in their high-stakes matchup

Due to the contrasting styles of each man, as well as the added theatrics that have taken place outside of the ring this week, the Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios matchup has taken over boxing’s center stage.

Set to face off with one another on Saturday night in Macau, China on HBO pay per view, Pacquiao and Rios will both be looking to bounce back from recent setbacks in a scene that will surely create serious drama and suspsense.

WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley, who defeated Pacquiao via split-decision in June of last year, showed great affinity towards the matchup during our conversation on Thursday afternoon inside of the Palazzo Resort in Las Vegas.

For Timothy Bradley, the night of Saturday, Oct. 12 will forever stand as an essential part of his makeup as a fighter.

A slight underdog heading into his match with Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez inside of the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Bradley (31-0, 12 KO’s) produced perhaps his most disciplined and intelligent fight as a professional in capturing a split-decision verdict following twelve tense rounds of action.

And while Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) was dangerous every second of the bout, Bradley found a way to neutralize his offense despite absorbing the occasional heavy shot.

At the post-fight press conference, Bradley was asked if he feels a victory over Marquez, one of the best Mexican fighters of all time, would finally get him the respect he feels he has been lacking.
