It was about two years ago now that trainer Robert Garcia received word that one of his star fighters, Argentina’s Marcos Maidana, would be a big underdog heading into a matchup with three-division world champion Adrien Broner in San Antonio, Tex.

Maidana would end up having a great camp down in Oxnard, Calif., for that match, ultimately scoring a big upset that led to a pair of fights with Floyd Mayweather. As for Broner, he has since bounced back with 3 decision victories over Carlos Molina, Emmanuel Taylor, and John Molina Jr.

In the evening’s main event, Broner (30-1, 22 KO’s), by way of Cincinatti, Oh., will tangle with Akron’s Porter (25-1-1, 16 KO’s) in an NBC-televised affair set as part of the “Premier Boxing Champions” wave of telecasts that have been sweeping the airwaves.

There has been some definite chiding and trash talk coming from Broner’s end and once again the Cincinnati native was in jovial spirits as the weigh in. As for Porter, he remained calmed and collected, hitting 144 pounds on the dot while Broner hit the scales at 143.5 pounds.

Good to see undefeated welterweight hopeful Errol Spence Jr. get a chance to still fight on this weekend after seeing his fight with Roberto Garcia fall apart earlier this week when it was revealed that the Weslaco, Tex. native was pulling out for personal reasons.

Spence (16-0, 13 KO’s) was looking at the Garcia fight as his chance to break out and he will instead have to settle for a matchup vs. brash Phil Lo Greco, who stepped in at the last minute.

Once upon a time, there was a bantamweight boxing sensation Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22 KO’s).

The reason for the past tense, is because the new, current Donaire has been feeling like he is no longer the fighter that he used to be in the past. Knowing that, he is trying hard to get back to the old Donaire, the unstoppable one.

The press, the boxing community, and even general sports fans, many of whom believe that Floyd Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO’s) is as boring a fighter as they get, are nonetheless always on their toes looking for who will challenge the technical virtuoso next.

When discussing Mayweather, the word blueprint seems to come up fairly often. Is there a way to beat Mayweather? Is there a specific style, or person to finally scrape that zero off of his record? No matter who enters the ring against Floyd, it always seems like an easy night for the champ.
