Tucked away in the city of Hayward in Northern California, former two-division junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan continues to wait to see if his name will be called for a huge opportunity to face off with Floyd Mayweather on May 3.

While not having dived into full training quite yet, Khan has been working closely with trainer Virgil Hunter in recent months in an effort to hone his skills as much as possible during his down time.

And despite not appearing to plea for the opportunity, Khan can’t deny how much the opportunity would mean to him at this point in his career.

“I’d love to fight Floyd Mayweather,” Khan revealed as we spoke following his training session. “In my opinion he’s the best fighter in the world.”

Robert Garcia feels that Marcos Maidana’s upset over Adrien Broner itself is worthy of a shot at Floyd Mayweather

When Floyd Mayweather took to social media to ask the fans who his next opponent should be, there was definitely a strong reaction.

Mayweather threw up two potential opponents, British star and former titlist Amir Khan and Argentina’s Marcos Maidana, in an effort to get some further discussion going on his May 3 ring return inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Catching up with Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia recently, he reacted to Mayweather’s latest move.

“You know what? Floyd Mayweather is Floyd Mayweather,” Garcia explained. “He’s the man in boxing. Why he does it? Because he knows he can do it. I don’t blame him. He’s the best at what he does. He’s the one that makes the most money in the sport. Why not do it?”

Garcia went on to add that Maidana is as deserving of a shot at Mayweather as anyone else based off of his recent run of success that has included dramatic victories over Jesus Soto Karass, Josesito Lopez, and Adrien Broner.

“Especially what he did with Broner,” Garcia reflected of Maidana’s upset this past December that left the sport buzzing and saw him crowned as the WBA welterweight champion of the world.

“Nobody thought we’d beat Broner,” Garcia added. “He not only beat him, but the way he beat him. He pretty much dominated almost every round. He not only put a beating on him but he also humiliated him. I think that win itself deserves the shot at Mayweather, honestly.”

Amir Khan: ‘Why would Mayweather even consider putting Maidana in the mix?’

After hearing of Amir Khan’s personal diss towards him on Facebook about a possible fight with Floyd Mayweather, Argentina’s Marcos Maidana has fired back at his former foe. Khan questioned why Mayweather is looking at Maidana as an option for his May 3 ring return, claiming he has slow hands and slow feet.

Maidana took to Twitter and has since called Khan out.

“Forget about the stupid poll and Mayweather! Got tired of @AmirKingKhan. MAIDANA VS KHAN MAY 3RD OR WHENEVER. THATS THE FIGHT,” Maidana claimed.

Stay tuned for more updates.

As seen in an update to his personal Facebook page on Feb. 6, British star Amir Khan recently questioned why pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather is considering Argentina’s Marcos Maidana as an option over him for his May 3 opponent in Las Vegas.

Khan claimed the following.

“Why would mayweather even consider putting maidana in the mix. Slow hands slow feet. Only thing he brings to the table is power. I agree he beat broner. We seen how mayweather deals with power eg Canelo. Let broner have his rematch on the undercard of khan v mayweather. I bring speed explosiveness power and footwork to the table. Look back at quick opponents mayweather has fought in the past, Judah , Oscar delay Hoya both had speed and where close fights. Floyd did say he needs fans want to see him knocking someone out because his fights are boring. So no wonder he’s know wanting to fight maidana. I’m ready and been in gym for last 6 months. At 147 you will see a different stronger Amir khan. Ok let’s talk about the chin which I always laugh about. Killing yourself making weight makes Ur punch resistance poor. Iv been killing myself making 140 lbs and should of moved up. Day before weigh in Iv been 12 pounds over. Not good. Iv taken the biggest shots from likes of maidana with 30 Ko’s under his belt, who pple say is the biggest puncher and didn’t go down but then Diaz puts me down with a little shot. Even though my balance off an I was on 1 foot it’s cool. Il take it. So this proves weight making is the problem. Another example Angulo and ward have hit me with big shots and I’ve stood in front n not gone down They carry 25 lbs over me and are big punchers. This is because I’m at my natural weight. It’s in the fans hands who they want to c me fight. If it’s not me then good luck who. Ever it is.”

Floyd Mayweather asks the fans if he should fight Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana next

At the moment, there is still no official word on the next opponent of five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather.

All set for a May 3 ring return inside of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Mayweather seems to be angling towards a lucrative clash with British fan favorite Amir Khan but has also toyed with the idea of facing Argentina’s Marcos Maidana.

On Dec. 14 in San Antonio, Maidana scored a huge upset over Adrien Broner to capture the WBA welterweight championship while also raising his stock.

Mayweather took to his personal Instagram page on Sunday night and posted a side by side photo of Khan and Maidana.

“I’m going to let the fans vote,” Mayweather stated while posting the photo. “Tell me who I should fight next. Khan or Maidana?”

So far the results have been pretty even, with fans of followers of Mayweather showing interest in both Khan and Maidana.

Roy Jones Jr. looks at Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan as two of the few fighters who can trouble Floyd Mayweather

While up in Big Bear, Calif. recently, I was able to have many conversations with the great Roy Jones Jr., who was in camp assisting his friend Jean Pascal ahead of his HBO showdown with Lucian Bute two weekends from now.

When the topic of Floyd Mayweather came up, Jones instantly paid his respect to the Grand Rapids native as the best in the game today.

“In boxing today he’s the best,” Jones said without hesitation. “He’s the best marketing-wise. The best skill-wise right now. He’s just the best out there right now. And none of these guys are really equipped with enough tools to really give him problems.”

Jones did mention Mayweather’s rival Manny Pacquiao as perhaps one man who could possibly test him but is keen enough to sense that such a match likely won’t occur anytime soon.

“Expect maybe Pacquiao and that fight aint really happening,” Jones stated. “One or two other guys who could make it interesting.”

If Mayweather does end up facing off with British star Amir Khan this coming May as has been suspected, Jones doesn’t see it being as easy of a fight as many as expecting.

“It’s a good match for him,” Jones explained. “People don’t think so, but people don’t know that Amir Khan, when he’s a boxer, he’s a very good fighter. Amir Khan the slugger is no good, because his chin is a little bit suspect. But as a boxer, Amir Khan can give anybody problems.”

“And if he gets his old self back together and boxes, it will be an interesting fight because he’s tall enough, rangy enough to make it hard for Floyd to get to him,” Jones added. “Floyd is a better boxer of course, and probably a better puncher, but this kid has a big heart and this kid will make it interesting if he comes in with the right training method and comes in and tries to win.”

Floyd Mayweather continues hurling insults on Instagram, this time turning his attention to Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana, and once again Pacquiao

Over the past few days, Floyd Mayweather has gone on a bit of a mocking spree on Instagram.

It all started on Dec. 22, when Mayweather released his own “Christmas card to the world”. Along with his message, Mayweather posted a four-picture collage that mocked his rival Manny Pacquiao. [Click HERE to see the photo]

A few days later, in a shot that may have been taken upon Mayweather’s arrival from Tokyo, he could be seen having fun again with Pacquiao and this time with the Filipino star’s trainer Freddie Roach.
