Another championship weekend has come and gone with its share of fireworks. We witnessed a dominating performance by the New England Patriots and another incredible NFC championship game involving a come-from-behind victory from the Seattle Seahawks.

Championship weekend is finally upon us. Arguably, the best weekend of the NFL season, it has played host to “The catch”, “The drive,” and the infamous rant by Richard Sherman after he tipped the potential game winning pass to seal a Seattle victory in last year’s NFC championship.

On September 27th, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson defeated Chris Cariaso by a Kimura in the second round. Johnson’s win begs the question ‘Who’s next?’

Since the UFC created the Flyweight division there has never been a champion outside of Mighty Mouse. In 2012, the UFC conducted a tournament to decide who would be the first Flyweight division champion. Johnson fought Ian McCall twice for the title since the first fight ended in a majority draw. Johnson won in a unanimous decision in the rematch to become the first Flyweight champion and has never looked back.

The referee called an end to the fight, but instead of cheers for the victor there was an eerie silence hanging over the crowd. No one wanted to be the first to applaud. Frankie Edgar did not celebrate by running around the cage or climbing to the top and pointing furiously into the audience. Instead he held his arms up for only a second and walked over to check on his defeated opponent. A legend of the sport had just fallen and the way he had fallen is what turned the crowd so solemn.

B.J. Penn returned to the UFC on July 6th for the rubber match against the first Lightweight to beat him in 8 years, Frankie Edgar. As the 10-1 underdog Penn was never expected to come close to winning, but no one expected the beat down that would ensue. Edgar handily beat Penn through two rounds and finished him in the third by raining elbows down on Penn’s head.
